So what does WELS mean for architects and specifiers?

WELS means that architects and specifiers who import for sale, sell — or even make — water-using products have legal responsibilities. They need to ensure WELS compliant products are designed and incorporated into all domestic and commercial building projects.

The WELS water-using products are toilets, urinals, some taps, showers, registered flow controllers, washing machines and dishwashers.

Note that the WELS scheme does not mandate installation requirements — these are specified under relevant plumbing/building codes and regulations.
