So what does WELS mean for builders?
WELS requires certain water-using products to be labelled for their water efficiency to be legally sold in Australia.
This means that builders who import for sale or sell WELS products (e.g. as part of selling new buildings or doing renovation work) have new legal responsibilities.
The water-using WELS products are toilets, urinals, some taps, showers, registered flow controllers, washing machines and dishwashers.
Waterless urinals are not currently included under WELS.
Note that the WELS scheme does not mandate installation requirements — these are specified under relevant plumbing/building codes and regulations.
