How to label
Only registered products may be labelled — see the registration fact sheet for how to register.
Mandatory WELS labels apply equally to all products sold in Australia, whether manufactured locally or imported.
Who is responsible for labelling a WELS product?
Labelling a product or its packaging is primarily the responsibility of manufacturers and importers, with retailers and wholesalers responsible for point of sale labelling.
Manufacturers/importers are responsible for:
- producing the labels, and
- putting WELS labels on the product/packaging before dispatch.
Retailers/wholesalers are responsible for ensuring that:
- the labels are properly attached to the product at point of sale, and
- the WELS labels remain fully visible while the products are offered for sale.
You will need to verify your labelling responsibilities with your commercial suppliers.
