Expiring WELS scheme registrations
The WELS scheme requires showers, specified tapware, lavatory and urinal equipment, dishwashers and clothes washing machines to be registered and to carry a water efficiency star rating label.Flow controllers may also be registered and labelled under the scheme on an optional basis.
The scheme started in 2005 and registrations expire after five years unless renewed.
Suppliers (including manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, builders, plumbers, online sellers and retailers) of WELS products must ensure the products they supply have a current WELS registration.
We encourage you to start planning for your own re-registrations and decide which product models you intend to keep supplying beyond their first expiry date. These products will need to be re registered.
It is an offence under the WELS Act 2005 to supply un-registered WELS products.
If you rely on somebody else in the supply chain to register WELS products, then you may want to discuss re-registrations with them to ensure that the stock you supply will remain legally available.
A simple re-registration option will be available in the near future through the WELS scheme website at www.waterrating.gov.au.
WELS Registration Database
In response to feedback from stakeholders, WELS registrants are advised that the 'log-out time' for using the WELS Registration Database for making a WELS product application has been increased from 30 minutes to one hour.
This change has been made to reduce the likelihood that a registrant will be automatically logged off the database while completing an application.
