Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards
(WELS) Scheme

WELS Labels

Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2005

About the labels

A sample of the WELS label must accompany your on-line application for registration.  Specifications for the label are detailed at Annex B of the WELS standard (Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS6400:2005 Water-efficient products - Rating and labelling) that is available for purchase from Standards Australia.

The standard contains important information about the label design, including rounding of the litres per minute/water consumption figures, size, colour and font.  Labels for plumbing goods require your licence number to be printed on them — a specific licence number for your use only is generated when you register on-line for the first time.
For all labels, a trim or die cut margin of up to 2 mm around the label is acceptable.  .
Please remember that different products may have different labelling requirements, but the colours and font are the same regardless of which product they are being prepared for.

Colours

The labels are to be printed on a white background.  The colours for the labels are referenced to the Pantone colour system.  (Pantone is the definitive international reference for selecting, specifying, matching and controlling ink colours.)  For digital printing, the CMYK (Cyan, Magneta, Yellow and Black) breakdown of the Pantone colours may be helpful.

Monochrome (e.g. black and white labels) are only acceptable when the label is fixed to packaging or displayed in specifications, brochures, magazines and websites and the rest of the packaging, or specifications, brochures, magazines and websites are also printed in monochrome.  Monochrome labels shall remain faithful to the design of the label and the message of the label shall remain clear and unambiguous.

Font

The font shall be Gill Sans, Humanist 521 or Hammersmith.  The preferred font is Gill Sans.  Only one font is to be used on a label.

Downloading the sample labels

PLEASE NOTE - these are sample labels only and may not meet the all of the labelling specifications as required by the WELS standard. It is your responsibility to ensure that supply of a WELS registered product is labelled with a WELS label that meets the specifications.

The labels are available in EPS, GIF, JPG and TIF files.

If you have trouble downloading these files or require a format suitable for use on Macintosh systems please contact us.

Please Note: The links to high quality EPS and TIF files are suitable for print purposes. Many web browsers will not display these files so you will need to right click on the link and select Save Link As... (Netscape) or Save Target As... (Internet Explorer).

To open an EPS file you will need a graphics program that handles vector-based files, such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Freehand or CorelDRAW.

When downloading EPS files with Internet Explorer or Netscape, the file extension is automatically changed from ".eps " to ".ps ". To ensure the integrity of the file, please change the file extension back to ".eps" before saving it to your computer.

For generic templates for the energy labels see the Energy Rating  web site. This is useful for applicants creating a combined water/energy label as the relevant energy label can be downloaded to be inserted into the combined label.
