So what does WELS mean for local government?

Local councils are often the first port of call for residents seeking advice on reducing their domestic water consumption or looking for information on rebates on water efficient products.

Councils also provide and maintain public facilities which use water, in particular toilets and taps.

WELS requires certain water-using products to be labelled for their water efficiency to be legally sold in Australia. These products are toilets, urinals, some taps, showers, registered flow controllers, washing machines and dishwashers.

WELS can help local governments to improve their water efficiency, particularly by using high star rating water efficient products in their public facilities.

WELS star ratings can also be used as criteria for ratepayer rebate schemes on purchases of water efficient products. WELS products can also be specified for retrofitting or water efficiency auditing services.
